about

Big Sky is the first single from Cate Taylor's soon-to-be-released second album, following on from her debut album Red Dirt, which was launched in 2020.

Written in lockdown when spending lots of slow time with friends walking among the trees by the Merri Merri and pondering the ongoing battle on Dja Dja Wurrung country to protect the sacred birthing trees.
Shortly after writing this song, on the day Victoria was declared "open" and distracted in celebration, the Vic govt went in and destroyed the culturally significant Sacred birthing tree, devastating all who'd worked so desperately to defend it.

lyrics

BIG SKY

I walked with you
When that’s all we could do
And the sky felt big
We shared some books
And you played songs for me
So daringly

And I, I loved seeing you
With tall trees for company
We don’t know if they’ll be here for long
We don’t know the secrets scared men keep

We work and dream
Of how to hold the world
And keep it safe
We take note when the moon is full
It helps
This too will pass

And I, I loved seeing you
With tall trees for company
We don’t know if they’ll be here for long
We don’t know the secrets scared men keep
And we wonder where should we________
Put our grief

And if I forget
And if you remember
And if I forget
Please promise me you’ll hold the tender x 2
Please
